Plaza del Mar Band Shell Restoration

Reviving a treasured community space

History

Established in 1899, Plaza del Mar was a favorite location for strolling and community gatherings. The Band Shell, a designated City of Santa Barbara landmark, was constructed in 1919 to provide a venue for public concerts. Five thousand people attended the opening concert on May 4, 1919, which featured a 22-piece municipal band. Designed in the Mission Revival style by Winsor Soule, the Band Shell is the only remnant of the iconic structures which once graced historic Plaza del Mar.

Project

An assessment of the building condition in October 2020 revealed structural damage to the building frame, roof, and wooden stage. In addition to completing structural repairs, The City of Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department is seeking to restore the original stage lighting, install full electrical service, and construct a fully accessible pathway and ramp to the stage.  The restoration of the historic Band Shell will provide a fully functional outdoor performance space and revitalize Plaza del Mar as a public destination for music, theater, dance, and celebration.

Partners and Funding

PARC has successfully secured over $55,000 to support the restoration of the Plaza del Mar Band Shell through generous donations from local foundations and private donors, including the Santa Barbara Foundation, the Ann Jackson Family Foundation, the Alice Tweed Tuohy Foundation, and Santa Barbara Beautiful. The Parks and Recreation Department has secured more than $750,000 in additional funding to move the project to construction.

We are now seeking donations and local sponsors to fund free community concerts and performances at the Band Shell once the restoration is complete.

Help us provide free entertainment for the community at the soon-to-be restored Plaza del Mar Band Shell.
